How to Use a Disc Sander: A Beginner’s Guide
Do you want to use your disc sander but aren’t sure where to start? This guide will walk you through what a disc sander is, when to use it, how it works, and step-by-step instructions to safely and effectively operate one.
As machinery experts since 1954, Sterling Machinery Exchange is here to help you get started with confidence—whether you’re a weekend woodworker or setting up your small business shop.
When to Use a Disc Sander
Disc sanders are extremely handy tools for precise and aggressive sanding needs. Here are a few common ways beginners use them in home or personal workshop settings:
- Finishing Wood Projects
Use a disc sander to quickly smooth and shape wood surfaces, round off edges, or prepare materials for painting or staining. - Shaping Small Metal Pieces
Ideal for light grinding and smoothing metal, especially for hobby projects or custom metal parts. - Furniture Repair
Remove old paint or varnish, clean up surfaces, and reshape joints with ease when restoring furniture. - Craft Projects
Perfect for DIY crafts like cutting boards, wooden toys, or small décor items needing a smooth finish.
Know the Parts of a Disc Sander
Before you get sanding, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the key components of your disc sander.
- Sanding Disc
The round abrasive surface that spins and sands material. Disc sizes vary—this model uses a 16” disc. - Work Table
A flat, adjustable surface that supports your material while sanding. Often tilts for angled sanding. - Motor
Powers the disc, typically mounted in the base or pedestal. - Dust Port
Connects to a vacuum or dust collection system to keep your workspace clean. - Power Switch
The on/off switch for starting and stopping the machine safely. - Pedestal Base
Elevates the sander to a comfortable working height and ensures stability.
Use a Disc Sander in 5 Steps
1. Take Proper Safety Precautions
Before turning on your disc sander, make sure to wear proper safety gear including safety glasses, hearing protection, and a dust mask. Ensure the sanding disc is securely attached and free of damage. Keep your workspace clean and well-lit, and never wear loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in the machine.
2. Set Up Your Workspace
Place the sander on a flat, stable surface or use the pedestal mount as with the Apex 16” model. Make sure the work table is locked at the desired angle, and connect your dust collection system if available. Double-check the power source and cord placement to avoid tripping hazards.
3. Choose and Attach the Right Sandpaper
Select the appropriate grit for your project—coarse for aggressive removal, fine for finishing. On this machine, you’ll mount adhesive-backed discs directly to the platen. Press firmly to ensure even contact.
4. Power On and Position Your Material
Turn on the sander and allow it to reach full speed. Hold your material with both hands and gently press it against the sanding disc, keeping it on the downward-moving side of the disc to prevent kickback. Keep fingers a safe distance from the disc.
5. Sand Evenly and Carefully
Move your material in smooth, controlled motions. Let the sander do the work—don’t apply excessive pressure. If sanding metal, periodically dip the piece in water to avoid overheating. Once finished, turn off the machine and wait for the disc to come to a full stop before setting your material down.
